Few things consume our attention like money troubles. During times of low cash flow, all of life's difficulties seem exaggerated. And the harder life becomes, the harder it is to stay focused and motivated to press on and correct course.
Most of us know that the only way to ever achieve financial freedom is to make more money, and many are willing to do whatever it takes to jumpstart their income. Yet most fail to do so effectively... why?
The truth is that most people simply don't know how...
If that sounds like you, fear not! You've come to the right place.
There is good news! It turns out that money-making is a game that operates according to certain rules, and those rules can be learned and manipulated to increase your income-to-expense ratio, thus making your money grow.
Most people rely on a job to make money. This is fine, but what happens if you get laid off? What if the company goes under? What if the boss cuts your hours? There are many variables beyond your control that directly determine your fate, and many people often find themselves without a job.
Whether you are without a job involuntarily, or you have a job but want to escape the 9 to 5 life, there are methods available to you that will enable you to generate income without needing a job.
There are many ways to accomplish this, and I'm going to share a few of the very best! I've compiled a list of the top 5 proven strategies to make money without a job. I have personally made money with ALL of these methods! Here they are:
- Sell Your Unused Stuff
If you need money right now, there's no easier way to get fast money than by selling your unused stuff. We all have stuff lying around that we don't use, so why not sell it to someone who will use it?
The main benefit to this strategy is that it gets you cash fast. The main drawback is that it isn't sustainable for very long, since you will eventually run out of stuff to sell!
But if you need fast cash, it's hard to beat this approach. So let's look at some ways to implement this.
First, find the stuff that you can do without. If you look hard enough, you can always find something you own that you don't need. In fact, you can probably find a whole lot of stuff you either don't need or don't use, and therefore wouldn't miss, that you can trade for money.
There are various avenues available to sell your stuff. Craigslist is great, as is Facebook Marketplace. You can also put your items up for sale on eBay, or sell on the app LetGo (it's fantastic for buying/selling locally).
An alternate strategy is to reach out to people who know and follow you through social media. It's free, and often works quickly.
Note: I highly recommend utilizing as many of these platforms as possible. It doesn't take much time, and the more posts you put up, the greater your chance of selling!
2. Sell a service on Fiverr
Do you do something really well? Of course you do. And in today's internet-driven world, each of us has vast untapped money-making potential. Any skill you have can be monetized. That is the truth, and it's a glorious one.
So first, we need to first identify which skills we want to monetize. Ask yourself: what can I do that people will pay for? The answers might surprise you.
There is a website called Fiverr.com, which is free to join, that allows service providers to post "gigs", which are then viewed and purchased by people in need of their particular services.
There are certain types of services that Fiverr caters to. Consider the following:
Can you write well? Writers can earn a lot of money on Fiverr by writing articles, ad copy, essays, and other types of written content for people.
Are you bilingual? Translation services can be a great source of extra income if you're fluent in two or more languages.
Can you edit photos? Graphic design is a popular category on Fiverr, so if you have any skills in this area, you can start making money!
Can you read out loud? Ok, so most of us can do this, but if you can do it particularly well, you can provide voiceover services on Fiverr. You'd be surprised at how much work is out there for voiceover actors. All you need is a decent microphone (like this one for under $23).
Can you talk on camera? If you have a smartphone, you can make money by doing paid testimonials for advertisers. Basically, people will pay you to talk to your phone's camera for 30 seconds, 1 minute, or however long, about a particular product. In most cases, you are given a script, so all you have to do is read it in front of the camera!
You don't necessarily need expensive camera equipment to get started. Smartphone cameras work fine for many gigs, and in many cases the natural look of a smartphone camera is actually preferred because it adds authenticity.
These are just a few examples. Look through the website to see all the different types of gigs provided, and see which one(s) you think you can do! Once you've identified them, join Fiverr for free and you're on your way!
3. Service Arbitrage
This is getting into more advanced territory, but this can be extremely effective if done properly. The basic idea goes something like this:
- Find a service that can be purchased online (for example, custom graphic design).
- Find people looking to purchase that service (for example, a local business looking for graphic design for a billboard).
- Purchase the service cheaply and sell it for more to the buyer, collecting the difference as profit, as a sort of "finder's fee" (for example, by buying a graphic design gig on Fiverr for $50, then delivering the product to the business for $150).
When looking for these gigs, I suggest going to Fiverr.com or Upwork.com. These are great choices because there are many skilled gig providers on these sites, and many of them live in India, Philippines, or other areas where the currency exchange rate is favorable.
In simple terms, a dollar is worth a lot more to them than it is to us. For the entrepreneurially minded, this is a prime opportunity to use the "buy low, sell high" strategy. Buy the labor cheaply from third-world or second-world countries, then sell it at cost. It's simple, ethical, and effective.
So let's examine this process. In my example, I used a business looking for graphic design for a billboard. The process would look something like this:
I find local businesses looking for graphic design.
I check Fiverr to see what prices I can get graphic design done for. Let's say it costs $50 for a fully finished piece (you can seriously get high-quality work done this cheaply).
I then contact the owner and offer them my graphic design service for $150. I collect the $100 profit. I rinse and repeat this process, making an easy hundred dollars every single time.
There are many, many different ways you can approach this. I used graphic design for a billboard in my example, but the possibilites are limitless! This takes a little more work to get deals on the front end, but it can have a huge payoff!
When you've done a good job with a client once, they are likely to become repeat customers, so you can make seriously good recurring income without a job using this approach!
4. Kindle Publishing
This is a longer-term strategy, and it's one that can make you serious amounts of recurring passive income! It can be done with very little capital, although the process can be streamlined and enhanced if you have a little bit of money to invest.
It works like this:
- Find topics that people search for on Amazon's Kindle store.
- Choose a topic, and write a short ebook about that topic (or outsource this job cheaply to overseas writers).
- Create a cover for your ebook (or outsource this job)
- Publish the ebook on Kindle
- Collect royalties each time someone buys the ebook, forever.
It really is that simple. If you have little to no money to invest, you can write your first ebook yourself. You don't have to be an expert on whatever topic you choose. You just have to know more than the average person.
One free strategy is to borrow the expertise of others. Just research the topic thoroughly for a day or two, being sure to use trustworthy sources. Then use your newfound knowledge to write your book.
An easier strategy, albeit one that requires a little bit of money, is to outsource the content creation. This is my preferred method, as you can get it done so cheaply overseas, using services like WriteArticlesForMe.com.
When it's all said and done, the success of this strategy depends on many factors, but the most important deciding factor here is this: how many people will see and purchase this ebook?
Obviously, people need to see the book before they can purchase it, so how will people see it? It just so happens that Amazon has staggering numbers of daily searches on the Kindle store, so if you do it right, your book will show up when someone types in a keyword related to your book.
In the ideal case, you do keyword research to find phrases that people are frequently searching for, and which don't have too much competition from other ebooks. You then choose this as the topic/title/etc. of your ebook.
This requires some specific knowledge and training to do properly, and getting this right means the difference between a lucrative income stream and a book that just sits there making zero sales.
I recommend the K Money Mastery Program, which is a very affordable complete training program that teaches you how to set up a Kindle publishing business from scratch with zero technical knowledge. I took the course, so I personally can vouch for its effectiveness!
5. Affiliate Marketing
This is my personal favorite. Affiliate marketing is an incredibly powerful strategy that has virtually unlimited potential. As a business model, it is one of the absolute best solutions for anyone looking to make money without a job. It works like this:
You recommend a product to someone. They purchase that product. You get paid.
So simple, so elegant, so lucrative!
Businesses always want new customers, so if you can bring them new customers, you will be paid a commission for your troubles. This is the heartbeat of affiliate marketing.
In some types of affiliate marketing, like CPA marketing, the person doesn't even have to buy anything for you to get paid! In these cases, they just have to enter their email address, and you get money!
To get started in affiliate marketing, you'll need to find a good affiliate network. An affiliate network collects offers from businesses that are willing to pay commissions to affiliates, and handles all the transactions to ensure that you get paid properly.
What this means for you is that you can go to a website, get a big list of offers to choose from, all collected neatly in one place, view the payout rates, allowed traffic sources, etc., and start promoting offers right away. You don't have to deal with anything else once you've set up your account. The network handles all money exchanges and tracks everything so you can see all the important metrics (how much you earn per click, how many page views your offers are getting, time of sale, etc.)
The success of this strategy depends on many factors, but one of the most important ones is driving targeted traffic. The offer can be great, but if nobody sees it, nobody buys it. Also, if the wrong kind of people see it, you're not going to make sales.
There are many different methods for getting the offer in front of the right audience. These fall under two basic categories: free and paid.
Free traffic generation strategies rely primarily on search engine optimization (SEO) tactics coupled with content in the form of blogs, articles, reviews, etc. For example, you could start a blog related to Fitness For Moms, then use SEO strategies to rank highly on Google for specific keywords that moms who are into fitness will care about. When they search for their topic on Google, your blog appears on the first page, they visit your blog, they read your recommendations for some product or service and decide to buy it, and you get paid.
One of the towering advantages free traffic strategies like this have that paid strategies don't is that you can get enormous amounts of visitors coming to your site without doing anything at all! Once your site ranks highly on Google, you will receive visitors and, thus, make sales while you sleep, without paying a dime!
But free traffic strategies generally take time to become profitable. Using white hat, organic SEO tactics for Google, you can realistically expect to wait about 6 months before your website ranks high enough to receive significant traffic. Of course, more traffic means more sales, so your sales will typically grow with time, in accordance with your traffic. But if you're willing to wait it out, sites like these can really become powerful and sustainable sources of huge passive income!
(Note: It can happen a bit faster with YouTube, but that's a whole different topic for a different post.)
Paid traffic is a different game altogether. With paid traffic, you drive visitors instantly to your site, but you spend money. The more visitors you buy, the more sales you get, so the game is all about balancing the equation so you make more in sales than you spend on traffic.
Although many aspects of paid traffic require specialized know-how (I highly recommend getting proper training before attempting to start, keep up with my coming blog posts for more info!), the basic equation is no different than it is with any other business: more money in + less money out = profit = GOOD!
Earning more than you spend on advertising is the goal, but accomplishing that generally requires a detailed knowledge of tracking, split testing, optimizing, and other essential paid marketing skills.
But if you're willing to invest in learning the skills required to do paid traffic, it can make you a virtually unlimited amount of money... seriously! The game involves balancing the money in / money out ratio so that the campaign is making a positive ROI (simply put, for every dollar you spend, you make more than a dollar back), then scaling the campaign.
The scaling part is what makes this such a gold mine. Using huge traffic sources like Facebook, Google, Instagram, etc., the potential traffic is bafflingly vast. You can scale up to numbers that are unimaginable to traditional, non-online businesses.
In other words, once you're spending $1.00 and making back $1.50 consistently, you can then increase your ad spend to $10.00, and you can make back $15.00, instantly increasing your profits by 10x! So then why not scale to $100, or $1000, or $10,000?
You basically rev up the ad spend to rev up the profits. All it takes is a few clicks of your mouse, and you've skyrocketed your earnings. The profits can get outrageously hefty here! So I don't think I need to sell you on the potential of this strategy... it's simply astonishing.
But again, I must reiterate that paid traffic is a game that isn't recommended for novices. While the profit potential is high, so is the risk. You can end up playing with a lot of money at a given time, which means you can lose a lot quickly if you don't know what you're doing.
If you do know what you're doing, however, this method can make you a fortune. There are many, many examples of people becoming multi-millionaires utilizing paid affiliate marketing techniques. If you want to get into this, I suggest investing in high quality training to teach you how to play the game properly.
Note: The ROI on a campaign doesn't always translate scale exactly with ad spend, so you may see smaller margins but greater overall profits as you spend more. But that's a topic for another post...
